A letter

The heels you never carry home.

In a red brick townhouse on a quiet New York street, two friends keep the tea warm and the door open — and the pair every woman asks about waits by the front door.

The Eleanor, waiting by the open front door.
The Eleanor, waiting by the open front door.

Somewhere after fifty, a lot of women quietly give up on lovely shoes. We keep the flat ones, the dark ones, the ones nobody looks at twice, because we have learned what the pretty pair costs by the second hour. Nobody tells us to. We simply stop expecting to feel elegant on our own two feet, and after a while we stop asking — we dress to disappear from the ankles down, and we call it sensible.

I have written about women and what they wear for a long time, and I have heard that story more times than I can count. So when women kept telling me about a small house in New York where they felt at home again — in the room itself and in their own clothes — I wanted to understand what happens behind that door.

The front room, with the door open to the street.
The front room, with the door open to the street.

It starts at the door. Parker & Hayes lives in a red brick townhouse on a quiet street, behind a blue-gray bay window and a small brass plaque, with a blue-gray front door that is nearly always left open. “Our door is always open,” Margaret says, and she means it literally. The women who visit all describe the same greeting: “Come in, make yourself at home.”

Inside it is not a store. It is a home. The front room has warm wood floors, an old wooden table piled with folded knits, and daylight falling through the bay window. There is a cup of tea if you want one, and nobody rushes you. Every so often Eleanor comes down the stairs with an armful of knits, past the rail of coats in the hall, and the two friends tease each other about whose taste is better. Women do not come here as customers. They come as guests.

Margaret loves a graceful neckline and a touch of polish; Eleanor will always reach for the softest thing in the room. Their house rule settles every argument: nothing comes in unless it is elegant and comfortable. When I asked which piece women ask about most, they did not point to the table at all — they pointed to the floor by the front door, where a lace-up mid heel called the Eleanor stands ready to be stepped into. “It is the pair women try on and then keep on,” Margaret said. So I asked them why, and I am going to let their words carry it.

1A heel you can stay in all day

A heel you can stay in all day

“The heel is mid-height and sculpted, and it is set squarely under your weight instead of tipping you forward. You get the lift and the lengthened line of a proper dress shoe with a steadiness that lets you stand through a whole ceremony, or cross a parking lot, without thinking twice about it. We keep a pair by our own front door for exactly that reason — it is the one you can step into on the way out and still be happy in at the end of a long dinner.”

2The ribbon that makes it fit your own foot

The ribbon that makes it fit your own foot

“A slim tie threads through the openwork and finishes in a soft bow at the front, and that bow is where all the comfort comes from. You draw the shoe in to your own instep — snug if your foot asks for snug, easier if it doesn't — so your heel sits where it should and nothing slides or chafes while you walk. That, we always say, is the difference between a shoe in your size and a shoe that is genuinely yours.”

3Petal cutouts you notice up close

Petal cutouts you notice up close

“Small petal-shaped openings curve along the sides of each shoe. They keep the upper from feeling closed-in on a warmer day, and they are the reason we brought the pair into the house at all: they give it a delicate, hand-finished look that a plain pump simply does not have. From across the room you see an elegant shoe; standing next to you, people see the petals and the quiet shine on the toe.”

4Room for your toes, in five colors

Room for your toes, in five colors

“The toe is softly tapered rather than sharply pointed, so it reads elegant from a distance and still leaves your toes somewhere to go — no squeezing, and no numb spots at the end of the evening. Choose Navy, Black, Burgundy, Ivory or Cognac, each with a smooth polished upper and a natural-tone stitched sole, in sizes 5 through 11. The quiet ones go with everything already hanging in your closet; the warmer ones lift a plain dress all on their own, from the front room to lunch with friends.”

Every order leaves the house the way a guest would: wrapped with care, with a little card on which Margaret writes two words. Welcome home. It sounds like a small thing. Reading what women write back, I am not sure it is.

Because not every woman can walk through that blue-gray door herself, Margaret and Eleanor have now opened it online as well, and the Eleanor stands there the way it stands in the hall. To celebrate, they are holding their very first Open House, with the door wide open for a little while.

What I would tell you if we were friends

So many of us made a quiet bargain years ago: we would stop wearing anything lovely on our feet, and in return nothing would hurt. What struck me about Parker & Hayes is how gently they argue with that — an open door, a warm front room, and a pair you can put on for the occasion and then keep putting on for the ordinary days in between.

If you have been reaching for the same flat, dark shoes every morning, come in and have a look at the Eleanor. Take your time, and pick the color you would reach for most — the quiet ones go with everything you already own. Their door is always open.

Welcome home.

Warmly,
Elizabeth Carter
